Retirement Age Calculator: Full Retirement Age by Year

Enter your dates above and press Calculate.

What is this tool?

The retirement age calculator finds your full retirement age and the date you reach it, for the United States, the United Kingdom and India. Full retirement age is the age at which you qualify for a full, unreduced pension, and it is not the same in every country, nor the same for every birth year: in the United States it rises in steps by birth year, in the United Kingdom it is set in bands that are still under review, and in India there is no single national age at all. Enter your date of birth and your country below and the calculator gives the figure for that country, with the date you reach it. This page is a guide only and is not financial or pension advice; pension rules change, and the official source for your country is the final word.

How it works

For the United States, the calculator uses the Social Security full retirement age table, which rises from 65 for people born in 1937 or earlier, in two-month steps, to 66 for people born from 1943 to 1954, then in two-month steps again to 67 for people born in 1960 or later. The date you reach full retirement age is your birth date plus that many years and months. For the United Kingdom, the calculator uses simplified bands, because the exact State Pension age depends on your exact birth date and the bands are under review: 66 for people born from 1954 to 1960, 67 for people born from 1961 to 1977, and 68 planned for people born from 1978 onwards, with a transitional band before 1954. For India, there is no single age to calculate, so the calculator shows the two most common benchmarks instead: 58, the age for a full Employees' Provident Fund pension, and 60, the retirement age for central government employees, with the dates you reach each.

Worked example

Worked example: born 15 May 1990. In the United States, the full retirement age for someone born in 1990 is 67, reached on 15 May 2057. In the United Kingdom, the same person falls in the planned 68 band, which is under review and should be checked against GOV.UK before being relied on. In India, the same person reaches 58 on 15 May 2048 and 60 on 15 May 2050, and which of those applies depends on the scheme or employer, not on the birth date alone.

When to use it

Full retirement age is the number that retirement planning is built around, because it is the age at which the full pension is paid without reduction. Planning to retire before it usually means a smaller pension, and planning to retire after it, in the United States, can mean delayed credits up to age 70. Knowing the exact age and the exact date matters because pension decisions are made in months, not just years: a full retirement age of 66 years and 2 months is a different date from 66 years, and a plan built on the rounded figure will be two months out.

The country difference is the other reason this page exists. A person who has worked in more than one country, or who is comparing systems, cannot carry one country's figure into another country's rules. The United States table, the United Kingdom bands and the Indian benchmarks are three different systems with three different logics, and this page keeps them separate, by country, rather than blending them into a single number that would be wrong everywhere.

This page gives the age and the date. It does not give the pension amount, which depends on contributions, earnings history and the specific scheme, and it does not recommend a retirement date. Those questions need a pension statement and, for most people, a qualified adviser. Treat the result here as the date to plan around, not as advice to retire on it.

Step by step

Using this page takes a birth date and a country, and gives the full retirement age and the date it is reached.

  1. Enter your date of birth in the first field. The birth year is what selects the band in the United States table and the United Kingdom bands.
  2. Choose your country: United States, United Kingdom or India. The result changes completely with the country, so choose the system whose pension you are asking about.
  3. Read the headline result: the full retirement age for that country and birth year, and the date you reach it, where a single date exists.
  4. For the United Kingdom, check the result against the GOV.UK State Pension age checker, because the bands are simplified and under review. For India, note which benchmark applies to your scheme or employer.

The date is calculated by adding the full retirement age to the birth date in calendar months, with the day clamped to the end of the month when needed, the same way as the date calculator. A person born on 31 January whose full retirement age falls in a February will reach it on 28 February in a non-leap year, not on a date that does not exist. That detail matters for the exact date, even though it rarely changes the year.

One more note: the result is the full retirement age, not the earliest age you can retire. In the United States, for example, benefits can usually start at 62 at a reduced rate, and delaying past full retirement age can increase them up to 70. Those are separate decisions with separate numbers, and they are not calculated here, because they depend on the scheme and on choices only the individual can make.

Common mistakes

The most common mistake is assuming 65 everywhere. Sixty-five was the classic retirement age, and it survives in conversation long after the tables moved on. For someone born in 1990, the United States figure is 67, not 65, and planning on 65 would retire two years early on a reduced pension. The year of birth is part of the answer, not background, and any retirement age quoted without a birth year should be treated as a guess.

The second mistake is treating the United Kingdom's planned 68 as fixed. It is the current plan for people born from 1978 onwards, but it is under review, and the exact age depends on the exact birth date in the transitional years. A plan that depends on 68 should be checked against the official checker, and revisited if the review changes the timetable. The same caution applies to every country's rules: pension ages are legislation, and legislation changes.

A further mistake is planning from the age alone without the date. Retirement planning is done in dates: leave dates, pension start dates, tax years and employer notice periods all run on dates, not on ages. The calculator gives the date for exactly that reason, and the date, not just the age, is the figure to carry into a plan.

More worked examples and notes

The examples below use the same tables as the worked example, and each can be checked by entering the same birth date and country into the tool.

The United States table is the most precise of the three systems on this page, because it is set by birth year in law. The United Kingdom bands are a simplification of a system that is set by exact birth date and is under review, and the Indian figures are benchmarks, not a single rule. That difference in precision is honest, not a flaw in the calculator: it reflects how the three systems actually work, and the page says so wherever the figure is approximate.

Frequently asked questions

What is full retirement age?

Full retirement age is the age at which you qualify for a full, unreduced pension. Retiring before it usually means a reduced pension, and in some systems delaying past it can increase the pension.

What is the full retirement age in the USA for my birth year?

It rises by birth year: 65 for 1937 or earlier, in two-month steps to 66 for 1943 to 1954, then in two-month steps to 67 for 1960 or later. Enter your birth date above for your exact figure and date.

What is the UK State Pension age?

In simplified bands: 66 for people born from 1954 to 1960, 67 for 1961 to 1977, and 68 planned for 1978 onwards, with a transitional band before 1954. The exact age depends on your birth date, so check GOV.UK.

What is the retirement age in India?

There is no single national age. Common benchmarks are 58 for a full Employees' Provident Fund pension and 60 for central government employees, with state governments and other employers varying between them.

Can I retire before full retirement age?

Usually yes, at a reduced pension, and the reduction depends on the scheme. In the United States, benefits can usually start at 62 at a reduced rate. The reduction is a scheme calculation, not something this page can give.

Is this financial advice?

No. This page gives the age and the date from the published tables and bands. Pension amounts depend on contributions, earnings and scheme rules, and any decision should be checked against an official statement or a qualified adviser.
